Top 10 Differences between Gr. 1 & Gr. 6
1. Writing: In grade 1 we just started learning how to write neatly. In grade 4 to grade 6 we had to learn how to do joint writing, and then get our pen license.
2. Math: We learnt how to count up to one hundred in grade 1, we learnt addition and subtraction. Once we got up to at least grade 3 we learnt our times tables. Now in grade 6 we have learnt fractions and decimals, BIDMAS, division and mental strategies to help us with addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
3. Sport: In grade 1 we learnt how to run properly and how to skip. Now we do a whole lot of different sports. We also do cross country, house sports, inter-school sports and round robins.
4. English: In grade 6 we learn how to use figurative language and grammar. We also read a book and then do work sheets about it. In grade 1 we learnt how to read simple books and we got a little bit of English homework.
5. Art: In grade 1 at art we coloured in a lot or we painted. We also got free drawing time, now we do more complex art works. We use clay and use lot of paper to make things. We also wrote our names in graffiti writing.
6. L.O.T.E: In grade 1 L.O.T.E we coloured in a lot, and didn’t learn much Greek. Now we have to read in Greek and write in Greek. We also have to make a play in Greek.
7. Reading: When I was in grade 1 I had to bring books home to read, they were really short books but I hated them. Now I love reading and I read every day, I have been reading The 39 Clues and I am up to the 5th book, it is a really exciting book.
8. Buddies: In grade 1 we didn’t do activities with our buddies but we still would see them at recess and lunch time. This year in grade 6 we have our own buddy. In grade 5 we did activities with our buddies every Thursday.
9. Teachers: My teacher in grade 1 was Mrs Mexias, the teachers in grade 1 were very easy going and we learnt simple things. If we didn’t do something right it wasn’t as bad as it is in grade 6 because we were really young. Now in grade 6, we have a bigger responsibility and do harder work.
10. Library: At library in grade 1 we didn’t watch a show and do an activity about it, we only started doing that in grade 3. Our library teacher was Mrs Power, but now in grade 6 our library teacher is Mrs Reid. We watch a show called ‘Double Trouble.’ It is a great show and I enjoy watching it.
Top Ten Most Enjoyable Moments in Grade 1
1. Werribee Zoo.
I liked Werribee Zoo because I could interact with the animals; learn about where they lived and what they ate. It was a great experience with animals, especially in Grade 1.
2. Lego Education Centre at Moonee Ponds.
It was enjoyable as we could make models of Lego, learn about how Lego was made and interact with Lego machines. In fact, there was also science and friction involved in it too.
3. Puppet Making.
Puppet Making was in the Top Ten List as it was great fun designing, creating and then after playing with them. I remember at home, I played with my brother and I got so many laughs from it.
4. Being VIP.
Being VIP was enjoyable as I was able to take objects from home that were close and about me and getting VIP letters to be able to read at the end of my VIP week. It was also great in Grade 1 to be the centre of attention.
5. The 30th Serpell Anniversary Fair.
The fair was so fun as you could buy fairy floss, show bags and go on different rides on Serpell’s 30th Anniversary. It was also great to celebrate Serpell’s 30th Anniversary with my friends.
6. Swimming at Aquarena.
Swimming was a good chance for me to have fun while swimming and at the same time learning about swimming. I also loved the fact that we got a game day at the end of our two weeks of swimming.
7. Ben Bear.
It was always better than any reward for the class as every time we won it we could always carry it back to the class and cuddle it. At the end of the week, we always got to do a performance and being in the production of it was great.
8. Claudia Raindrop.
We could watch a show about the water cycle by Yarra Valley Water and have so much fun watching, talking and doing other things about it. It was also related to our topic and it was also fun to watch.
9. The Teachers.
All the teachers looked after us and Mrs Manicom always let us play a game or watch a movie with Mr Burden and his class. Mrs Manicom was a really great teacher who always helped us with our work whole-heartedly.
10. Life Education.
Life Education just made it into the Top Ten List as we had lots of fun watching movies about health and sticking laminated paper pieces onto the fabric wall. The only thing that wasn’t fun was the presenter always said it was a real giraffe, but I thought-even in Grade 1- that it wasn’t real and could’ve done better at doing a more lifelike puppet.
Top 10 Fun Moments in Grade 1
1.Grade 1-2 sleepover:
In the sleepover we all had to sleep in the hall. We watched Alvin and the Chipmunks while we were having ice-cream and popcorn.
2.School Fair:
At the school fair we have rides and prizes. We had stalls. There was delicious food. The grade six’s had to do a performance.
3.Fun Friday:
In the last hour of Friday we always used to go out for a game or we had free time I the classroom.
4.Swimming:
In swimming we used to learn about water safety and how to survive in the water. On the last day we got free time in the pool and we could join up with any groups and play a game in the water.
5.Water cycle:
We learnt about water cycle and how animals survive. We also learnt about animal habitats. We had a turtle visit us from the zoo. We all got to pat him. Each day one class got to feed him and take care of him.
6.Timetables:
In grade 1 we used to practice our 2,3 and 5 times tables. Every week we used to have a test. If we got all of our times tables correct we would get table points.
7.Explorers:
In explorers we would have to make or build something out of crafty stuff and blocks. We would sometimes have to spray cream on the table and then we would have to write our spelling words in the cream. The teacher had to check if wrote our words correctly in the cream.
8.Mrs. K:
Mrs. K was my teacher in grade 1. I had a lot of fun with her. She was very nice and helpful. She taught me a lot of stuff.
9.P.A.T.H Kid:
In grade 1 the teacher would pick out a name from a box and I got chosen to be the P.A.T.H kid for a week. Being a P.A.T.H kid is really fun you get to bring in a photo of yourself and you would get to stick it on P.A.T.H board.
10. Market Fresh:
In market fresh we would get to make a fruit salad or a healthy vegetable pizza. We would get to choose our ingredients. At the end we would get to eat it for lunch.
Top 10 Fun Moments in Grade 1
1. Lego land:
We built a swan out of Lego blocks and also got to build a car and have a race against each other.
2. Homework:
When we first got homework we all thought we were big kids. For homework all we had to is take fifteen steps at your house.
3. School Fair:
At the school fair the grade 1’s did a performance in front of everyone. There were rock climbing, spinning cups, lucky dip and more.
4. Puppet making:
Two people came into our classroom and taught us how to make a puppet out of stockings, cardboard and wool. I called my puppet my best friends name Isabella.
5. Ben Bear:
Preps-2 only got to have Ben Bear. Mr Packet was in charge of asking Ben in which classroom he would like to visit for the week but he will only come if your class behaves.
6. VIP:
Everyone was really excited to be the VIP for the week. You needed to make a poster about your family and bring pictures to display on the table so everyone knew who you were.
7. Mr B:
Mr B bought us fish to take care of. That was when I had my first pet. We named him Goldie because it was a gold fish. That was the year when Mr B was getting married.
8. Timetables:
My first timetable that I learnt was the 10’s and 5’s. It was so exciting when we learned them because it made us feel like we were big children now.
9. Swimming:
We went to Bulleen for swimming. It was my first class. We learnt how to float on our backs. On the last day of swimming we got to play games and verse other people as well.
10. Werribee Zoo:
At the Werribee Zoo we got to see all the animals in the zoo. A lady came and took us to a place where there were reptiles and we got to touch a frog. Before we touched it we needed to where special gloves.
Top 10 Differences between Grade 1 and Grade 6
1. Maths: Maths in Grade 1 is really different to Grade 6 because they do lots of addition and subtraction whereas in Grade 6 you do lots of fractions, BIDMAS (brackets, indices, division, multiplication, addition and subtraction), and Division, multiplication and Times tables. Also grade 6 maths is harder than the maths that they do in prep because once you get to a higher grade they start to make it harder and harder so we can improve our skills on maths.
2. English: English in Grade1 is really different to Grade 6 because Grade 1’s does a lot of talking more than doing work sheets whereas in grade 6 we get like 4 worksheets to do on what where learning about such finding the main idea.
3. Writing: Writing is different in Grade 1 because you’re just learning how to wright on lines whereas if you’re in grade 6 you will be learning how to do joint writing and you’re also learning how to do essay’s to prepare you for high school.
4. L.O.T.E: It’s different to Grade 1 because in Grade 6 you don’t always do the same thing as you do in Grade 1 because if you do you don’t enhance your skills or anything so in Grade 1 you normally do easier work like just learning how to say numbers in Mandarin.
5. Sport: Sport is basically the same in Grade 1 and Grade 6 except they do harder physical activity’s to help improve your skills in Grade 6.
6. Art: In art for grade 6 it’s more complex then Grade 1. Also it is probably better because you have lots more fun.
7. Library: In Library it’s harder because you have to read more complex books so you enhance your skills for high school.
8. Homework: In Grade 6 homework is obviously harder because we didn’t really get as much homework in Grade 1 as we do in Grade 6.
9. Integrated: In Grade 6 we work on lots of federation and lots on the world and different countries, whereas if you were in Grade 1 you would be learning the countries in Australia instead of overseas
10. Spelling: In Grade 6 you get more and longer words than you will have in Grade 1.
